September 17th , 2024 is National Voter Registration Day

During my decades of immigration law practice, I have assisted hundreds of people with their Naturalization process and received many pictures of clients proudly showing their naturalization certificate. The pictures often include them holding a small U.S. Flag that is given to the participants in the swearing in ceremony. It is always an honor to have played a part in getting my clients to this point.

As I have written previously Voting is a Right of U.S. Citizenship as well as a Responsibility. All citizens, those born in the United States as well as naturalized citizens must register to vote. This is not automatic.

National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is on September 17th this year. Their website (National Voter Registration Day) provides the following information. NVRD is a nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to celebrating our democracy. Since its kickoff in 2012, the holiday and its team of thousands of partners have worked to get over 5 million Americans registered to vote. On their website there is a link that connects with your state voter registration site. On this site, you can also check your registration status or make changes such as address changes.

The deadline to register to vote varies by state. North Dakota does not require registration. Some states allow you to register to vote on Election Day if voting in person. Many states allow registration up to 15 days before the election. Not surprisingly , Florida has one of the most restrictive – 29 days before election day. Thus, the deadline to register in Florida for the November 5th  election is October 7, 2024.

PLEASE, PLEASE register to vote if you are a citizen. It can be done online in less than 2 minutes. You may do this easily through the  site National Voter Registration Day or go to Everything You Need to Vote – Vote.org

Please forward this email to remind your friends and associates that voting is important to our democracy.
